Bertha’s Revenge

From Grass to Glass:

Bertha’s Revenge Gin is distilled in a 125 litre copper still and the distillery is located in an old cattle shed in the farmyard at Ballyvolane House in Co. Cork. We are using whey alcohol as our base spirit (most spirits are made using barley or wheat grain spirit) and whey is derived from cow’s milk. Milk is separated into curds and whey (Little Miss Muffet and her scary spider). Curds go on to make cheese and whey has traditionally been regarded as a waste product and was fed to pigs. Special yeasts have been developed and are added to the milk whey to convert the milk sugars into alcohol. This produces a very high quality whey spirit which we are then distilling with 18 different botanicals. We are the first distillery in Ireland to produce small batch Irish milk gin from whey alcohol.

Big Bertha, a Kerry legend:
Bertha, a legendary Droimeann cow from Sneem, Co. Kerry died in 1993. At 48 years of age she became the world’s oldest cow, having given birth to an eye-bulging 39 calves over her lifetime. To immortalise her memory, we have brought her back in spirit…literally!

Using whey alcohol from Irish dairy farmers, our own natural spring water and incorporating an interesting mix of locally foraged and grown botanicals, we have hand-crafted a gin reflecting Bertha in her prime. A fragrant nose, soft mouth feel and warming spicy middle notes to mirror her maternal core. And a long, confident fruit-driven finish to celebrate her longevity.

“The gate is down and the beast is wild!”

On July 1st we’re hosting a very special party at our distillery. “Bertha-lele Gin Fest” is a celebration of our gin, local food and ukuleles! For tickets click here: http://ballyvolanehouse.ie/news/bertha-lele-2017-irish-gin-and-tonic-fest-2017-121/
