From the Curious Mind of PJ Rigney, Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin is slow distilled byhand with oriental botanicals and gunpowder tea at The Shed Distillery in Drumshanbo, Co.Leitrim. Through the years, the Curious Mind has taken many journeys from the familiar into Terra Incognita. The Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin botanical trail began in China, with PJ discovering and carefully selecting different botanicals as he made his way back through Indonesia, Morocco and Europe, finally finishing in the wild and unspoilt landscape of Drumshanbo, Co. Leitrim. He created The Shed Distillery, Connacht’s first Distillery in 101 years, with its gleaming medieval copper pot stills, and began a quest to fuse oriental botanicals with the local Irish ones. As it turned out, they got on very well indeed. The method combines vapour distillation of fresh Chinese lemons, Kaffir limes, and oriental grapefruits, along with the intriguing gunpowder tea, and pot still distillation of 8 other botanicals ranging from Chinese star anise to local Drumshanbo meadowsweet.
The recipe uses only fresh citrus fruits, leading to the signature fresh, rounded flavour.
Launched in May 2016, Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin was awarded Great Irish Beverages’ “Best Irish Gin and Tonic”, as well as “Best Irish Cocktail”, by public vote in Davy Macs, Waterford.
